Airlie Beach Airport

Whitsunday Airport, a private airport and airpark, handles general aviation flights in and out of Airlie Beach Airport. There is no Shire-operated airport in the town. Whitsunday Airport overlooks Funnel Bay, and is a short distance from the town. It has two runways appropriate for private planes and general aviation, including helicopters. There are several commercial charter airplane companies, and the airport is open to private pilots, as wells. At one time, Qantas flew regularly scheduled flights from Whitsunday Airport, but those appear to have been terminated. The passenger terminal has the Beaver Bar & Café for light meals, and restrooms. A departure lounge is available. For private planes using the facility, there are landing fees and overnight parking fees. Avgas, JetA1, and Shell W100 engine oil are available for purchase seven days a week, between 8 am and 5 pm. Other arrangements can be made, if required. The asphalt runways are approximately 1410 metres in length, and 20 metres wide. A security patrol at the airport is on watch overnight for the protection of parked aircraft. Several tour companies are based at Airlie Beach Airport, including Heli-Reef, Air Whitsunday seaplane tours, GSL Aviation, Tiger Moth Adventures, and Tandem Skydive.

Mount Rooper Circuit

Located within the confines of Conway National Park, you’ll find a trail providing some interesting looks at flora and fauna near Airlie Beach Airport. The Mount Rooper Circuit passes through woodlands, with Lophostemons, wattles, and grass trees that are sometimes four metres tall. The yellow flowers produced provide insects with food. Halfway down the track, a rocky outcropping forms a lookout over Swamp Bay. A sidetrack leads to the base of Mount Rooper, into the swamp.

Great Food

As Airlie Beach is primarily a tourist destination, one would expect good food. The town outdoes itself when it comes to restaurants. For instance, Capers at the Beach Bar and Grill is located inside the Airlie Beach Hotel. You can dine al fresco with fine cuisine and topnotch wines. The Village Café and Bar offers all day dining featuring fresh local food, and a wide variety of alcoholic drinks.
