Airlie Beach

Airlie Beach, Queensland is located in the Whitsunday Region and had a population of nearly 3,000 at the 2006 census. The surrounding Whitsunday Region had a population of about 31,000. It was believed that James Cook passed through the Whitsunday Islands on the Christian festival day, Whit Sunday; however, he was unaware of the date changes necessitated by the International Date Line. Airlie received its name in recognition of the Airlie Parish, Scotland. The chairman of a nearby Shire Council was born close to Airlie Parish, in Montrose. He was responsible for the name suggestion. Originally called Airlie, the name was officially changed to Airlie Beach in 1987. Airlie Beach is primarily a tourist destination. Backpackers and those departing for the Great Barrier Reef frequent the town. Locals and tourists describe the small town in a variety of ways, including touristy and commercial. Others say it is relaxed, friendly, and a natural environment. A survey, in 2000, showed that many locals categorize the town as an environment filled with sea views, islands, and hillsides, all covered with the abundant tropical vegetation. The ‘beach’ at Airlie Beach is actually a man-made swimming lagoon, as the natural beach is inhabited by marine stingers.

The Lagoon

This beautiful man-made lagoon was opened to the public in January of 2001. The lagoon allows you to enjoy the beach, without using the beach, which can be home to many nasty stingers and jellyfish. The lagoon combines natural features with its other attributes to produce an aesthetically pleasing spot for tourists and locals alike. There is a sandy beach at one end, with a children’s pool. The entire lagoon is surrounded by grassy knolls. Admission is free.

Great!Walk

Located within the Conway State Forest, on the Conway Range, you’ll find the Whitsunday Great!Walk, a trail that winds through rainforests and past rocky creeks. The rugged landscape traverses a wildlife haven that changes with the seasons. It takes three days to experience the entire Walk, but it is worth the time invested. Palm valleys, moss gardens, and open woodland views of the islands are just some of the features you’ll encounter.
