Alice Springs Airport

Alice Springs Airport is a Northern Territory regional airport. It is approximately 7 nautical miles, or 13 km, south of Alice Springs. It is owned by the Northern Territory Airports Pty., Ltd. And operated by the Alice Springs Airport Pty., Ltd. With two runways, it can accommodate a Boeing 777 landing, but not a fully laden takeoff, due to restrictions in place because of high temperatures and runway length. Revenue passengers in 2010 to 2011 number nearly 641,000. The airport is Australia’s 18th busiest. 1921 saw the first aircraft land at the airport, which at that time was located in the Alice Springs township. From about 1939 on, Connellan Airways was based at the airport. With the advent of military buildup, a large facility was needed to handle the heavier aircraft. The new airport was built, and the old one is now the home of the Central Australian Aviation Museum. The Australian Department of Defence built Seven Mile Aerodrome in 1940 for the RAAF and the United States Air Force, for the purpose of bringing supplies and troops to northern Australia. Although civilian aircraft were allowed, it was primarily a military staging facility until after the war.
