Bassendean, Western Australia

Bassendean, Western Australia is a suburb of some 9,650 people, northeast of Perth. The population figure is as of the 2011 census. The LGA is the Town of Bassendean, which has been divided into 3 wards, north, east, and west, and 3 suburbs. Bassendean is the largest of the suburbs. Aborigines were residents of the area for over 30,000 years before James Stirling explored the region in 1827. The Nyungah people had numerous sites of cultural significance. They also used the area as a tribal meeting place, as well as hunting and gathering. There are documents and oral histories relating these facts.

Agriculture was a significant contributor the early Bassendean region, with settlers acquiring parcels of land that they turned into farms in the alluvial flats on the Swan River. Peter Broun founded Stoke Farm in 1832, and named the farmhouse for his family’s home in Berwickshire. The name was Bassendean.

In the 1900s, railway industry became important with the building of the Midland Railway Workshops. The suburb had a definite working class character and the Workshops brought many new residents. A more cosmopolitan flavour was achieved after World War II, when Europeans of all nationalities made their homes in the area.

Pensioner Guard Cottage

It is believed that the Pensioner Guard Cottage was built in 1856. Pensioner Guards were retired British Army soldiers who were employed to guard convicts in the Perth area. The cottage in Bassendean is one of four that were built for the Guards’ families. It is the only one still standing. You can visit the quaint little cottage the last Sunday of each month, between 1:30 and 4:30 pm. John Law Davies was the first occupant.

Rail Transport Museum

If you are interested in old trains that have been restored to their former glory, you need to see the Western Australian Rail Transport Museum in Bassendean. The vast collection includes steam locomotives and diesel locomotives, most of them operable. Carriages and other equipment are on display, as is the Zanthus station. A signal box from Perth city station is exhibited. A working scale model train is housed in the complex.
