Biloela

Biloela, Queensland is located at the junction of the Dawson and Burnett Highways, in Central Queensland. There are approximately 5400 residents. Biloela is Banana Shire’s administrative centre. The meaning of the Aboriginal word is either ‘black or white cockatoo.’ In a move meant to remove perceived stigma, the government dockyards were called Biloela between 1870 and 1913. The stigma would have been the reference to the Cockatoo Island convict camp. The Council calls Biloela and its surrounds “The Shire of Opportunity.” Grazing and cropping are the two main industries, with wheat, cotton, and sorghum being the major crops. Callide Power Station are to the north of the town. The power station is fueled by coal. Discovered on Callide Creek in the 1890s, coal is mined from Callide and Boundary Hill mines, located near Biloela. Due to severe drought conditions and low rainfall in the area, the Callide Dam is often far below capacity. It is, nonetheless, a recreational destination for visitors and locals. The waters of the dam provide plenty of opportunity for water skiing, swimming, and fishing. An annual fishing competition is held on the dam. Eel-tailed catfish, yellowbelly, barramundi, and Saratoga are introduced stock in the water and provide sport for many people.

In 1944, the Callide Mine, an open-cut style coal mine, opened and became one of Biloela’s major sources of employment for residents. Located at the old Callide Station site, the mine supplies most of its coal to the local Callide Power Station, which has always been coal-fueled. The mine is now also a tourist attraction. You can take a tour of the mining facilities and view the extraction site from a number of different vantage points.
