Blackwater Airport

Blackwater Airport, Queensland is near a rural town, Blackwater, about 175 km from Rockhampton. At the last census, there were about 5,000 residents. At the last report, the airport discontinued operations. The Blackwater Airport remains available to emergency medical resources, such as the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The blackwater name comes from the dark water found in water holes. The water is discoloured by the black sand and decaying vegetation, specifically cedar roots. In 1877, the Great Western railway extension placed a train station here, thereby starting development of the town. Later in the year, a school opened. In 1886, the town was gazetted. The population grew slowly. In the early 20th century, there were fewer than 100 people. There was a hotel to support passenger train traffic and a coal mining operation owned by Mount Morgan Mines. Cattle saleyards were established in the early 1950s. Coal mining has been the primary economic support of the town. In 1967, the first open-cut coal mine started producing coal for shipment out of the state. The Cook Colliery began in 1970. Three more mines were established over the next decade, including Oakey Creek and Gregory mines, and Curragh mine.

Bedford Weir

The MacKenzie River flows north of Blackwater Airport, and the Bedford Weir is a manmade impoundment on the river. The beautiful scenery draws visitors to the area for camping, among other outdoor recreation. Fly-fishing on the river or the weir is a popular pastime, as is bird watching. The calm, relaxing waters provide for a smooth, untroubled kayak paddle. The weir is stocked with sports fish, including Saratoga and barramundi. There are self-guided trails throughout the bush.

Coal Centre

Blackwater Airport is near a fascinating gallery/museum called the Blackwater International Coal Centre. The Interpretive Centre educates visitors about the coal industry in Australia, particularly the Blackwater Airport area. A children’s area features a child-size interactive centre. The attached cinema shows new-release movies Thursdays through Sundays. With its conference and event facilities for hire, a café, and Japanese Gardens, the Coal Centre is the social and cultural hub for the residents of the small town.
