Bundaberg Airport

Bundaberg Airport, Queensland, serves the Bundaberg area on the country’s coast. It is about 4.6 km, or 2.5 nautical miles, from the Bundaberg city centre, at the intersection of North Childers Road and Takalvan Street. The Bundaberg Regional Council operates and owns the airport. It was officially opened as a civilian airport by Minister for Trade and Customs, Frank Forde, in December of 1931. With the advent of World War II, the Empire Air Training Scheme had the airport requisitioned as an RAAF Flying Training School. In 1941, RAAF Station Bundaberg was in use by the No.12 Elementary Flying Training School RAAF. In 1942, the training school left the Bundaberg area and relocated to Lowood Aerodrome, Tarampa. No. 8 Service Flying Training School RAAF commenced operations at the base. Five Squadrons and training schools of the RAAF operated from the base until after the war. The Royal Netherlands East Indies Army Air Force based the equipment and personnel pool here from June 1945 until April 1946. Today, the airport is served by QantasLink to Brisbane, and Seair Pacific to Lady Elliot Island. Virgin Australia and Jetstar Airways have both been in contact with Council to provide service at Bundaberg Airport.

Australia Zoo

Located a short drive from Bundaberg Airport, in Beerwah, the Australia Zoo is a glimpse at the wild life. Home of the Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, the zoo has 1200 animals or more and free shows every day. You can get hands-on with koalas, wombats, snakes, or kangaroos. Have your photo taken with a baby alligator, or hand feed an elephant. The African Safari Shuttle is a trip through the African savannah. Don’t forget the Crocoseum show.

Save a Turtle

Mon Repos Conservation Park is home to loggerhead, flatback, and green turtles that nest on the beach. Some of the endangered species are protected in this area near Bundaberg Airport. If you take a night tour, you might see the turtles come ashore to lay eggs or see hatchlings emerge from the nest and head out to sea. Bookings should be made in advance for this popular exhibition.
