Burpengary

A suburb of Brisbane, Burpengary, Queensland is in the Moreton Bay Region LGA, and has a population of just over 15,000 residents. Residing on the banks of Burpengary Creek, the suburb is largely residential with major retailers’ shops in the suburb. It is about 35 km from the centre of Brisbane and approximately 6 km from the Deception Bay coastline. The name derives from the aboriginal “burpengar” which meant “place of the green wattle.” In its earlier history, timber cutting was the first industry, after settlement in the 1870s. Logs were floated or rafted to Deception Bay on the creek. The railway arrived in 1888. The suburb was a truckstop on the M1, north of the city. After 1970, what was a small rural village grew to an urban area. A truck weighbridge still functions in Burpengary for transports. As planned communities expanded, Burpengary became a blue-collar suburb with much of the population employed in trade-related or laboring jobs. It is, however, beginning to attract more families, and professional people. As shopping, local services, and the transport infrastructure improve, more residents are coming to the suburb from the metropolitan area of Brisbane.
