Busselton, Western Australia

Founded by the Bussell family in 1832, the city in the South West region of the state is one of the fastest growing in the country. At the latest census, there were nearly 22,000 people residing in the tourist town. Early explorer Nicholas Baudin led a French expedition in 1801. His ships were the Geographe and the Naturaliste. The local bays were named for the ships. The Vasse River was named for Thomas Vasse, a sailor who was lost overboard.

Early settlers, the Bussells, established a cattle station in 1834. They called it Cattle Chosen and it quickly became very prosperous. The town name, Busselton, was first officially used in 1835, without the consent of the family. They preferred Capel, for a relative in England, Capel Carter.

World War II saw nearly 500 Busselton men sign up for duty in all three branches of the military. A memorial to those who were lost during the war is in St. Marys Park. The Air Force had a training base in the city.

Annual events are held in the town, including Southbound Music Festival in January and the Busselton Beach Festival. An Ironman Triathlon is held in Busselton each year.

Margaret River Wine

Margaret River Wine Region extends from Busselton to Augusta. Over the past twenty years, many vineyards have been planted along the river and in the fertile soil nearby. Busselton is a good place to stay while you explore the various wineries and sample the award winning table wines. Many of the local wineries serve as supplement income to the owners’ first enterprise, such as dairying, cattle, and crops. It isn’t unusual to attend a winery on a farm.

The Jetty

No trip to Busselton is complete without a trip to the Jetty, the longest one in the southern hemisphere. Along the 1.8 kilometre jetty, you’ll find the Underwater Observatory, where you can view the best artificial reef in Australia. The jetty was built 140 years ago, but has undergone an extension $27 million refurbishing. Interpretive displays are found alongside sculptures, swimming platforms, and fish cleaning bays.
