Caboolture

Caboolture is an outlying suburb of Brisbane, Queensland. The suburb is more than 43 km from the central business district of the metropolitan city. The population of Caboolture was about 47,000, in June 2010. Originally home to the Kabi Aborigines, the name “kabultur” is from the Yugarabul dialect and means “place of the carpet snake.” The Kabi were hunter/gatherers and fishermen, moving from place to place to take seasonal advantage of food supplies. The Kabi held a festival each March to celebrate the Bunya pine nuts, a staple of their diet and a nutritious food source. Neighbouring clans, invited to the festival, would participate in arranging marriages at this celebration. In the mid 19th century, pastoralists came into the area, and began experimenting with sugar cane and cotton growing. A settlement was needed to service miners traveling between Brisbane and the Gympie goldfields. Timbergetters took full advantage of the red cedar, so valuable at one time, and now so rare. The huge logs were floated down to Deception Bay, via the Caboolture River. From there, they were sent to Brisbane by steamer. Settlers made full use of the abundant timber that wasn’t exported. Today, the Queensland State Equestrian Centre is in Caboolture.

Sports and Events

Caboolture has ruby league and cricket teams that are strongly supported by the community. In August, near the end of the month, the suburb hosts The Australian Golden Gloves boxing tournament. Caboolture Football Club has had 2010’s most winners on final day, in the Sunshine League. Caboolture Snakes rugby group holds a number of titles and awards, including “best rugby league club” in Queensland. Visitors are always welcome at games played in the Brisbane suburb.

Country Music

The Urban Country Music Festival has been held in Caboolture for the past ten years. The three-day festival plays host to a number of important country music singers. In addition to a range of free events, there is a rodeo and free entry to the Village Precinct all weekend. There are camping sites available right in the middle of the action. Two stages are filled with important country music acts and artists.
