Cairns Airport

Now an international airport, Cairns Airport is privately owned by the North Queensland Airports Group, a consortium. It was formerly the property of the Queensland Government. The airport is located about 4.3 km, or 2.3 nautical miles, from the central business district of Cairns. It is located between Trinity Bay, to the east, and Mount Whitfield, on the west. In addition to helicopter and general aviation services, the airport has 44 domestic flights and 20 international destination flights. Australian Airlines was based here, until it ceased operations in 2006. It is a major facility for Qantas. The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia has a base here, as does the State Emergency Service’s search and rescue helicopters. The original airport started in 1928, with Tom McDonald and his deHavilland Gipsy Moth. He would take off and land only at high tides, as the sand ridge necessitated. The story goes that, during an emergency, McDonald took off from Beer Barrels. The airport was used by the RAAF and the United States Army Air Force during World War II. In 1943, the runways were restructured to accommodate military aircraft.

Terminals and Flight Paths

The two passenger terminals were built on the eastern side of Cairns Airport, in a mangrove swamp that was reclaimed. The Domestic terminal has five jet bridges and 17 gates. The International Terminal has ten gates, in total, and six jet bridges. The flight path to the single runway flies directly over Cairn’s beach suburbs, to the north. To the south, the flight path passes directly over Cairn’s central business district. General aviation uses a smaller runway.

Airlines

There are between 15 and 17 airlines that use the Cairns Airport on a regular basis, for passenger transportation. Qantas, QantasLink, and Cathay Pacific are some of the bigger lines, along with Jetstar and Virgin Australia. United Airlines has flights into Guam, and Skytrans flies to smaller domestic airports. Alliance takes care of domestic flights to outback airports, and China Eastern Airlines flies into Shanghai. Air New Zealand’s flights to Auckland are scheduled regularly.
