Cairns

Cairns resides in the farthest north part of Queensland. The regional city was founded in 1876 and today has a population of about 154,000 residents. It was named for William Wellington Cairns, a 19th century governor of Queensland. Before the arrival of European explorers and settlers, the Walubarra Yidinji people populated the area. They still claim it as the indigenous property, and call it “Gimuy.” James Cook first explored what he called Trinity Bay, in 1770. Official expeditions a generation later saw its potential as a port. It was founded in 1876, as the urgent need for transporting gold became important. Although it was mainly mangrove swamps and sand ridges, local labourers cleared the swamps and filled the sand ridges with mud, sawdust, and ballast from a nearby quarry. Construction debris was also used to stabilize the sand ridges. The lowlands were known for producing sugar cane, rice, pineapples, bananas, and corn. The tablelands supported dairy production. During World War II, the Allied Forces use Cairns as a staging base of operations for the Pacific war theatre. Both the RAAF and the US Army Air Force had operational bases here. Today, Cairns is widely known as a tourism centre. International tourists flock to the area for holiday vacations.

Water Sports

Cairns is widely known as a staging point for tours into the Great Barrier Reef, the Atherton Tableland, and the Wet Tropics of Queensland. The esplanade is a favorite location on the beach, with its swimming lagoon. Picnic areas with barbecues are in great demand, by visitors and locals alike. In May 2003, the Cairns Mayor, Kevin Byrne, declared that topless sunbathing would be permitted on the esplanade and beaches. This was in answer to the public pressure placed on the Mayor’s office.
