Caloundra

Caloundra is a coastal township of about 62,000 in Queensland, Australia. It is north of central Brisbane by about 72 km. The name may have come from an Aboriginal word describing beech trees, as there are many species in the coastal rainforests. The area where the township resides today was first surveyed in the 1870s; however, it showed no growth and attracted little interest until later in the 19th century. A hotel and store were established at Mellum Creek in 1878, for coach stopovers and for nearby cedar cutters, in Campbellville. Land sales began in 1883, and a bigger hotel was built in 1885. Tourists coming to the area in the early 20th century were required to make their way by road from the Landsborough railway station. There are a number of suburbs around Caloundra. Kings Beach was named for Allan King, who ran the Grand Central Guest House. James Moffat was honored by the naming of Moffat Beach. Bulcock Beach was named for Robert Bulcock who built the first house in Caloundra in 1875. Dicky Beach was in memory of the merchant vessel “Dicky,” forced aground during a hurricane in the late 19th century. Today, the township is home to many resorts, motels, and a small airport.

Everglades Cruise

The Noosa Everglades are located a short distance from Caloundra. The best way to explore the Noosa River and the everglades is on a guided tour, aboard a wilderness boat. You’ll visit the Kinaba Information Centre, located high over the wetlands on a boardwalk. Enjoy photographing the River of Mirrors, as the everglades are often called. Then, go to Harry’s Hut, after the cruise, and enjoy a barbecue lunch with meat, fish, wine, and fresh bread.

Underwater World

Discover the Sunshine Coast, the Glass House Mountains, then follow the coast to Mooloolaba, and its boutique shops. A tour guide will take you on the all-day tour, where you can see pineapple plantations and Caloundra’s Kings Beach. The relaxed but sophisticated lifestyle of the Sunshine Coast is a favorite with visitors and locals alike. Visit Underwater World, Queensland’s largest aquarium and oceanarium.
