Carnarvon Airport, Western Australia

Carnarvon Airport is a public airport in Shire of Carnarvon, Western Australia. Skippers Aviation provides the only scheduled flight bookings, and charter service is provided by Tropic Air. Transportation to the larger airport in Geraldton is available. A small passenger terminal for Skippers Aviation is located at the airfield close to the town. Carnarvon lies at the confluence of the Gascoyne River and the Indian Ocean, 900 km north of Perth. The coastal town had a population of about 5,300 people at the 2006 census. The administrative centre for Shire of Carnarvon, the town was established in 1883 and gazetted in 1891. It was named for the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies, Henry Herbert, 4th Earl of Carnarvon. In its early history, the town was a supply centre and port for the surrounding areas and communities.

As you fly in and out of the airport, you’ll see a great number of the tourist attractions in town, including the Big Dish, a satellite antenna that is nearly 30 metres across its reflector dish. On your flight, you’ll be able to see the huge banana plantations and panoramic views of the town of Carnarvon.

Cape Cuvier Coast Shipwreck

Cape Cuvier is very near the westerly point of Australia. As you drive your rental car along the rugged coast, you’ll be able to see the Korean Star bulk carrier that wrecked during a cyclone. The shipwreck occurred in 1985 and the ship proved unsalvageable. Along the cliff 60 metres over the ocean, you will probably see sharks and whales feeding in the ocean. The Cape Cuvier Coast is a short drive from Carnarvon Airport.

Bibbawarra Bore

You can view the spectacle of hot water gushing from beneath the earth’s crust at Bibbawarra. The borehole was discovered in 1905, and continues to provide a continuous flow of water. Early sheep and cattle enterprises troughed the water to the livestock, and it cooled along the way. The troughs’ remains can still be seen. Some of the troughs were 175 metres long. The water flowing from the borehole is 68 degrees, so exercise caution when you walk around it.
