Charters Towers

Charters Towers, Queensland is a city in the northern part of the state, located on Flinders Highway. At the 2006 census, the population was just under 8,000 people, a decrease of about 450 from the 2001 census. In the 1870s, Jupiter Mossman, a 12-year Aboriginal male, was with three miners, James Fraser, George Clarke, and Hugh Mosman. After a lightning strike nearby, their horses bolted. As Jupiter searched for them, he found them in a nearby creek, along with a nugget of gold. It was just the beginning of a gold rush where ten gold reefs were mined. These were major gold finds, and contributed so much to the economy of Charters Towers that, for a while, it had its own Stock Exchange. In the late 19th century, the population of the town was about 30,000 people. It was declared a town in 1877, and locals called it “The World,” as the residents believed they didn’t have to travel anywhere else for any reason. Anything they wanted could be had in Charters Towers. Over 6.6 million troy ounces of gold were mined between 1871 and 1917. Mining is making a comeback today.

Follow the Storyboard

Towers Hill Lookout and Amphitheatre is the final destination, but, as they say, getting there is half the fun. Start at the base of Towers Hill, finding the monument marking the first gold discovery in Charters Towers. The storyboards along the road are titled. There are 30 World War II bunkers on the hill, and a summit track leads to the ruins of the Pyrites Works. See a film called Ghosts after Dark. There are more storyboards at the lookout.

Ten Days in the Towers

The 10 Days in The Towers Festival is a celebration of many things. Held annually during the last week of April and the first week of May, country music takes center stage. But there is so much more. Bush poetry is read on street corners and in pubs, line dancing takes place throughout the central business district, and historic tours are led throughout the city.
