Cleveland

Cleveland, Queensland is a suburb of Brisbane, the capital of the state. It is located about 25 km from the central business district. At the 2011 census, 14,500 people lived in the suburb. There are two theories about the naming of the town. One is that Capt. James Cook named it in 1770, in honor of the Secretary of the Admiralty, John Cleveland. The second theory is that is was named by surveyors, 70 years after the Cook theory, for the 1st Duke of Cleveland, William Vane. Although the area was surveyed in the early 1840s, settlement was not allowed due to the existence of the Penal Colony at Moreton Bay. The original intent was for the area to become a seaport town, and in 1847, the town site was platted. Several circumstances prevented Cleveland from becoming an important port. The mud flats were nearly impossible to traverse and there were sand bars across the river. A fire and a series of wrecks removed all hope for Cleveland as a port. Early development in the city was comprised of what is now the Grand View Hotel, in 1852, and the courthouse.

Save a Turtle

An opportunity exists for you to help turtles in trouble near Cleveland. Located on North Stradbroke Island, a research lab is trying to isolate the cause of so many turtle deaths. Your “voluntourism” will allow you to help with the scientists’ research and survey the shoreline for waste. The turtles are known to eat the waste, and it is nearly always a fatal decision. Lunch is provided, as are ferry transfers and other activities during the day.
