Cooma, New South Wales

Cooma, New South Wales is a town that lies approximately 115 km from Canberra, the national capital, along the Monaro Highway. The Snowy Mountains Highway, that connects Riverina with Bega, also exists close to Cooma. The name of the town may come from an aboriginal word that meant either ‘open country’ or ‘big lake.’ The elevation of the town is 800 meters above sea level. At the last census report, Cooma had 6,587 residents. In 1823, Captain J. M. Currie explored the area where Cooma is today. In 1840, the first survey was completed and in 1879, it became a municipality. A railroad line from Sydney extended to Cooma in 1889, after previously terminating in Royalla. The passenger line closed in 1986. The headquarters of the Snowy Mountains Scheme located here in 1949, and the establishment of the hydroelectric and irrigation systems brought many workers to the area, from 27 different countries. At the ten-year anniversary of the scheme, in 1959, an avenue of flags was erected in Cooma to represent each country. Cooma calls itself “Gateway to the Snow Mountains.” Tourism makes up a major portion of the economy, especially in winter months. The Illawarra Institute has a campus in Cooma.

Old Monaro Railway Tours

Although Cooma’s rail service ceased to provide passenger transportation in 1988, the nostalgia of rail travel in the early 20th century can still be experienced by visitors. Each weekend, and on school holidays, you can board the old 1924 railcars and ride from Cooma to Bunyan. If you stay aboard the train, you can go as far north as Chakola. The old Cooma Railway Station is located on Bradley Street. The Cooma Visitors Centre can provide information.

Mount Gladstone and Nature Reserve

The Nature Reserve at Mount Gladstone Lookout is located just four kilometres from Cooma. This is a marvelous location to observe and appreciate the vastness of the Monaro and the unsurpassed views of the Snowy Mountains. The two lookout platforms are easily accessible, and provide unobstructed vistas that include the extinct volcanoes, called “The Brothers.” A reserve that protects the native bushland surrounds the lookouts, and there are picnic areas, free parking, and restrooms available.
