Coopers Plains

One of Brisbane’s outlying suburbs is Coopers Plains, Queensland, a city of about 4,100 people, according to the 2006 census. It is approximately 11 km from Brisbane’s central business district. Named for Dr. Henry Cowper, a surgeon at the Moreton Bay penal settlement, the suburb’s name was incorrectly entered into public records as “Cooper,” and so it remained. For decades in the 19th century, Coopers Plains was a transportation hub on a dray route. In 1869, the first school was built and is now known as Acacia Ridge Primary. In 1843, the Moreton Bay Jockey Club formed a racecourse in Coopers Plains, whereupon the Rose and Crown Hotel opened to visitors. The railway came to town in 1885, but the town remained rural until World War II. Between the war and 1954, the population grew to nearly 7,000 residents. Shopping centres were built, as was a hospital. There are several Government Scientific Laboratories in Coopers Plains, including a research facility. The Department of Agriculture, and Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases both conduct research at labs in the suburb. Forensic and Scientific Services are also located within its boundaries.
