Darra

An older suburb of Brisbane, Darra, Queensland is known for its high number of migrants. The population of the area, according to the 2006 census, was nearly 4,000 people. It is about 14 km to the southwest of the central business district of the state capital. Many homes were built in the 1940s and 1950s, in the Queenslander style. They are being joined now by new homes and townhouses built on previously vacant government land. Darra is surrounded by other suburbs including Mount Ommaney, Sumner, Richlands, Jamboree Heights, Sinnamon Park, Oxley, and Seventeen Mile Rocks. Sumner was the original name for Darra, until it became a separate suburb in 1969. In 1975, many Vietnamese refugees settled in the area. Access to Brisbane, Rosewood, and Ipswich is facilitated by CityTrain, through the Darra railway station. A main line is planed from the station to Springfield Lakes. The original railroad engineers and planners were Scottish, and it is believed that Darra was named for a railway town in Scotland. In 1979, the Darra station was a terminus for the electric rail lines of Brisbane. Convenient access to the central business district of the capital city is made possible by the Ipswich Motorway and the Centenary Freeway.

Vietnamese Influence

The influence of the Vietnamese people who immigrated to Darra is felt, especially, in the restaurants and grocery stores. One restaurant, named Cam Ranh, is known to the local residents as the “welcome welcome my friend” restaurant. The owner’s greeting and speech style are responsible for this naming. Three other Chinese/Vietnamese restaurants are found in Darra. If you prefer to cook your own ethnic food, the grocery stores have an abundance of the supplies you will need.

Go for a River Cruise

The tour company has been running cruises on the Gold Coast and Brisbane River longer than any other company has. You can depart from a number of locations, including Bretts Wharf, Mowbray Park, or Riverside Centre. If you depart from the Gold Coast, the Marina Mirage is the dock you need.
