Emerald

Emerald, Queensland is a town of about 13,000 people located in Central Highlands district. The Central Highlands Regional Council has its business centre in Emerald. The town lies on the banks of the Fitzroy River tributary, the Nogoa River. It is at the junction of Gregory and Capricorn Highways. The Tropic of Capricorn is just north of Emerald, intersection the Gregory Highway. First explored by Ludwig Leichhardt, the town wasn’t established until 1879, when the Central Line from Rockhampton needed a base. In the 1860s, Peter MacDonald, a former gold prospector, established several pastoral runs in the Emerald area. In the early 20th century, there were two churches, one Presbyterian and the other Methodist. Visiting clergy for other faiths would come through Emerald on a semi-regular basis, to minister to their congregations. Today, a large number of industries call Emerald home, including the Yamala Cotton Gin and coal mining operations. In addition to cotton growing as an agricultural activity, citrus, grains, and grapes are cultivated throughout the area. In 2004, a serious citrus canker outbreak forced the destruction of more than a half million citrus trees. There have been, infamously, several serious flooding disasters in Emerald’s history.

Gemstones

An area known as The Gemfields lies to the west of Emerald. The southern hemisphere’s largest sapphire fields are located here. Two small towns, Sapphire and Rubyvale, are named for the gems found in their immediate areas. GemFest is held annually in the region. Large numbers of visitors come for the festivities, games, food, and beverages, as well as to purchase the beautiful gemstones. The stones can be had either ‘raw’ or already set into stunning jewelry pieces.

The Dam at Lake Maraboon

One of the largest artificial lakes in Australia is Lake Maraboon. It covers nearly 150 square kilometres, and is held back by the Fairbairn Dam, a short drive from Emerald. In addition to providing needed irrigation for the cotton fields and others, the lake is home to water sports, and is very popular with local residents and visitors alike. Fishing is a popular pastime, as are waterskiing, swimming, and kayaking.
