Esperance, Western Australia

The Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia is home to Esperance, a large town of nearly 10,000 people. The town was named for a ship, the Esperance, which is French for ‘hope.’ Located on the Southern Ocean coastline, the town lies about 720 kilometres southeast of Perth. The town resides within the Shire of Esperance that has tourism, fishing, and agriculture as its major industries.

In 1627, the Gulden Zeepaert, a Dutch vessel captained by Francois Thijssen, sailed through the water off the coast. French explorers took shelter from a storm here in 1792. The Esperance was commanded by Bruni d’Entrecasteaux who sailed it through a fierce storm. The explorers made landfall near where the town is located today. Matthew Flinders sailed through the Bay of Isles in 1802. The British navigator named Thistle Cover and Lucky Bay.

In the late 19th century, gold was discovered to the north of the town, and miners and pastoralists settled in the area. The Dempster family first settled at the Esperance townsite in the 1870s.

In 1979, pieces of Skylab, the space station, fell on Esperance after the space vehicle broke apart over the Indian Ocean. The town fined the USA $400 for littering.

Cape LeGrand National Park

Did you ever see a kangaroo sunbathing on the beach? You can see that and more in this beautiful park known for its stunning scenery. The beaches are perfect for swimming, then the landscape changes into massive granite outcroppings with freshwater pools. The kangaroos soak up the sun in Lucky Bay, and you can camp not far from their favorite spots. Frenchman’s Peak and Mount LeGrand are renowned for rock-climbing. Wildflowers bloom in abundance in the spring.

Great Ocean Pathway

Meandering about the coastline of Esperance, the Great Ocean Pathway is, in a word, great. The Top Trail is 12 kilometres long and is used by walkers, cyclists, and prams. The bitumen track runs from the Bay to Twilight beach. Along the way, there is a bit of a climb following the road. But the track is separated from vehicular traffic by coastal bush.
