Gladesville

Gladesville, New South Wales is a suburb of Sydney, located to the northwest of the business district. It has a population of approximately 11,000 people and lies on the banks of the Parramatta River. The Gladesville Bridge links Gladesville on the North Shore to the Inner West of Sydney. The city’s first name was Doody’s Bay, named for John Doody in 1795. By 1836, other settlers had come to the area, including John Glade, who expanded the property in his land grant by buying from his neighbors. When Glade died in 1848, the land became the property of W. Billyard. Mr. Billyard named the area Gladesville, and subdivided it into residential and business lots. By the 19th century, many houses had been built in the city, and several of them remain today. Rockend was a cottage where Banjo Paterson, poet, lived in the late 19th century. It is now listed on the Register of the National Estate. The cottage now houses a restaurant. Rockend was on the banks of the Parramatta, and Paterson’s boyhood memories were of fruit boats, some able to hold 7 tons of produce. Paterson commented on how the fragrant aroma of ripe fruit could be smelled on the river.

Yacht Charters

Cruise past the famous Sydney landmarks, such as the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Farm Cove, Taronga Park Zoo, and Fort Denison, on a beautiful luxury sailing vessel. Or charter a company, such as Eastcoast Sailing, to sail you and your guests to a secluded beach or bay. The private charter cruises can be customized to include overnight stays, if that is to your liking. Many charters have catering and beverage service as part of the sailing packages.

Paterson Cottage Restaurant

Dine in the former home of Banjo Paterson, the country’s most renowned poet. The building, called Rockend, was constructed in the 1930s, and is classified by the National Trust. The cottage was restored in 1986, and became the home of this very fine restaurant. There are six acres of parks and landscaped gardens surrounding the cottage, a jetty for sailing craft, and a veranda where you can experience the same scenic vistas as Paterson did.
