Gosford

Gosford, New South Wales lies on the Central Coast of the state, at the northern boundary of Brisbane Water. At the 2006 census, the population was approximately 155,500 people in the administrative centre of the region. Many consider Gosford to be an exurb of Sydney, with a large number of commuters into the bigger city. Commuting is an easy task thanks in part to the strong transportation available through the area, in the form of Cityrail’s Newcastle & Central Coast Railway and the Sydney-Newcastle Freeway. In its earliest history, the Gosford area was home to the Guringai. These aboriginal people were coastal-dwellers, subsisting on the bountiful seafood and plants that grew along the coast. When European settlers arrived in Sydney in the early 19th century, some ventured further along the Hawkesbury River estuary. These explorers of the Brisbane Water district, as it is now known, began settling the land and soon engaged in timber industry. The main timbers cut for these early industries were Australian red cedar and ironbark. Soon, lime production began and cattle and sheep grazing contributed to the economy of the area. In 1887, a railway was completed to Sydney that required a tunnel through sandstone and a bridge over the Hawkesbury.

Galleries and Gardens

The shores of Caroline Bay are the location of the Gosford Regional Gallery. The exhibits at the Gallery include local, national, and international artistic endeavors in various media. Painting, sculpture, textiles, works on paper and more are included in the exhibits. The Gallery is surrounded by the Edogawa Commemorative Garden, which is home to timber footbridges, numerous trees, a teahouse, and a brassiere restaurant. Stunning displays of azaleas, lotus, and water lilies abound in the gardens.
