Goulburn

Goulburn, New South Wales resides on the Southern Tablelands, about 195 kilometres from Sydney and 90 kilometres from Canberra. The Goulburn Mulwaree Council has its seat in Goulburn. At the 2011 census, Goulburn had a population of 21,484. The city calls itself “Australia’s first inland city,” but Bathurst claims the same distinction. Goulburn can, however, rightfully claim to be home to the world’s largest concrete sheep, “Big Merino.” The Main Southern Railway line has a station in Goulburn, which also serves as a service centre for the pastoral industry that surrounds the area. The Hume Highway runs through the city, and Goulburn is a favorite stopover for travelers. Goulburn lies on the confluence of the Wollondilly and Mulwaree Rivers, which flow into Lake Burragorang. The Warragamba Dam construction was responsible for the lake. Ultimately, all these bodies of water flow into the ocean via Hawkesbury River. Goulburn was named for Henry Goulburn, an Undersecretary for War and the Colonies in the 19th century. The aborigines called the area Burbong, a Wiradjuri word that indicated an indigenous cultural district. When European settlers came to the Goulburn area, many of the indigenous Gandangara were displaced. Further incursion, by the introduction of exotic livestock, into the aborigines’ food supply drove more of them away from the area.

City Sights

“Big Merino” is the world’s largest concrete sheep and a symbol of Goulburn, which calls itself the “Fine Wool Capital of the World.” The giant statue has a gallery nearby that depicts the over 200-year history of wool in the country. The adjoining gift shops offers merino wool products ranging from baby clothing to cot blankets. A short drive away, you’ll discover Belmore Park, with its outstanding Victorian Band Rotunda and numerous civic monuments.

Bungonia National Park

New South Wales’ largest recreation area is Bungonia, an area of hilly ridges, cavernous limestone formations, and the spectacular gorge on Bungonia Creek. The Gorge is the deepest in Australia and one of the most dramatic in the world. Camping areas abound, with showers, toilets, and day-use areas. Bush camping at the Shoalhaven River is at the advisement of the Park Ranger. Rock sport activities must be registered with the Park office before proceeding.
