Grafton

Grafton, New South Wales resides in the Clarence River Valley and has a population of approximately 17,500 people, according to the 2006 census figures. Pre-European settlement, the river was the border between the Gumbainggir and Bundjalung nations. As with many other settlements in the Grafton area, early on, cedar-getters were the first settlers. Richard Craig discovered the red gold cedar waiting to be harvested. An escaped convict, Craig was granted a pardon and given 100 pounds to bring a group of cedar-getters to the region. They traveled up the Clarence River on a cutter called “Prince George.” This group was followed soon after by another group led by John Small, on the “Susan.” Small made his home on Woodford Island. When Grafton was proclaimed a city in 1885, it had already been officially named after the Duke of Grafton, grandfather to Governor FitzRoy. The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw the economy supported by logging, fishing, sugar, beef cattle, and manufacturing. Today, tourism is important to the local economy. In 1932, a one-of-a-kind bridge was built over the Clarence. It is a double-decker road/railway bridge. It completes the rail connection between Brisbane and Sydney. It’s also a link on the Pacific Highway.
