Hornsby

Hornsby, Hornsby Shire, New South Wales is located on the Upper North Shore of the state and is considered a suburb of Sydney. It is the seat of the local government area for the shire. In 1830, Samuel Henry Horne, a convict turned constable, apprehended the bushrangers MacNamara and Dalton. As a reward he was granted land that he named Hornsby. One of the first settlers to Old Mans Valley was Thomas Higgins. In 1886, a railroad station was established named Hornsby Junction. Hornsby Station was one stop further south, and confusion was the order of the day, with passengers getting off at the wrong stop. They named the old Hornsby station Normanhurst in 1898, in honor of Norman Selfe, an engineer and prominent activist. Today, various rail lines have routes through Hornsby, including the Northern Line and the North Shore Line of CityRail. Railway service to the Sydney central business district is availed via Epping or Chatswood. Freight lines and express trains stop here on the way to Newcastle and the Central Coast. The Pacific Highway passes through Hornsby. A large shopping centre, called Westfield Hornsby, is located on the eastern side of the city, and draws shoppers from nearby neighborhoods.
