Hurstville

Hurstville, New South Wales is a suburb in the southwestern portion of Sydney. It lies about 16 km away from the central business district. It is considered part of the St. George area. In 2006, Hurstville had a population of nearly 24,000 people. It has developed into an area of high-rise residential buildings and numerous commercial buildings. Financial institutions, retail shops, and insurance companies make their commercial homes here. In 1808, two brothers, Robert and John Townson were granted land in the area, with John claiming 1950 acres that became Hurstville. Robert’s land ultimately became Penshurst, Mortdale, and parts of Peakhurst. Other land grants were made later that same year. Although John Townson gained additional land, where Beverly Hills and Kingsgrove reside today, both he and his brother were unhappy with the quality of the land. It is likely that neither of them took up residence on their land grants. Simeon Lord ultimately bought John’s land and called it Lord’s Forest. In 1850, that was subdivided into small farms on Croydon Road. A post office used the name Gannon’s Forest, but a local school was called Hurstville by the school inspector in 1876. The railway chose to take that name for its station.

Train Tours

Historic locomotive 3016T pulls the 3801 Limited tour train to various destinations around the Sydney area. Cockatoo Run, Illawarra Fly, Steam to the Suburbs, and Steam to Goulburn are just some of the runs this famous old train makes. Cockatoo Run starts near Hurstville, and travels the Illawarra route to Wollongong. The coastal scenery is spectacular, but soon you’re passing rainforests and waterfalls. This is an amazing way to spend the day looking at scenery.

Restaurants in the Suburbs

It is not uncommon to find superb restaurants in the big city of Sydney, but international cuisine may be hard to come by in the suburbs. The Heritage Court Restaurant is an exception. And it is exceptional. Voted as one of the best restaurants in Australia, the cuisine is international, with an emphasis on fresh seafood. Top quality steaks are char-grilled, and the accompanying dishes are skillfully made and presented to the waiting diners.
