Inverell

Inverell resides on the banks of the MacIntyre River in northern New South Wales. On the Gwydir Highway, near the western slopes of the Northern Tablelands, the city has a temperate climate. The population in 2006 was 9,749 residents. Alexander Hamilton had the 50,000-acre Inverell Station in 1848. The word is Gaelic and means ‘meeting place of the swans.’ The confluence of Swanbrook Creek and the MacIntyre River was known as “Green Swamp,” in the 1850s. In 1853, a store was established by Colin and Rosanna Ross, wheat growers. Ross asked that a town be surveyed and it was accomplished in 1858. The first land sale was held the same year. In 1875, diamonds were discovered in Copes Creek. They were mined at Copeton between 1883 and 1922. Sapphires were mined at Frazers Creek near Inverell, beginning in 1919. Some mining activities continue today, finding tin, sapphires, zircons, and industrial diamonds. Inverell is sometimes called “Sapphire City.” The city is a major contributor to Australian sapphire production. Copeton Dam holds the city water supply, which is three times the capacity of Port Jackson, Sydney Harbour. It is said that, even below 3% of its capacity, there is enough water for ten years, without water restrictions.

Pioneer Village

Inverell Pioneer Village has homes and historic buildings dating back to 1841. The peaceful village setting includes Grove Homestead, Keera Station Blacksmith’s Shop, the Mining Museum, and the old Inverell Hospital. All the buildings are filled with artifacts pertinent to the building. The village is open Tuesday through Sunday, and daily during school holidays. This is a wonderful location to find out more about how early pioneers live in the 19th century.

Basket Swamp

Basket Swamp National Park is located in Tenterfield, near Inverell. The woodland park is wonderful for self-sufficient bushwalkers, as the only facilities are for bush camping. Timbarra Lookout, Basket Swamp Falls, and the Woollool Woolloolni Aboriginal Place reside within the park. Basket Swamp is a strategic wetland with sedges and heaths, storing, cleaning, and releasing water into local creeks. These local creeks, in turn, run into the important coastal Clarence River system.
