Jabiru

Jabiru, Northern Territory was built in 1982 for the miners who worked at the Ranger Uranium Mine. It is in the Kakadu National Park. The township is held by the Jabiru Town Development Authority, which subleases to the mining company, private businesses, and government agencies. The Town Council is responsible for governmental activities for the town. The population, at the 2006 census, was 1,137 people. The town can experience heavy rains during wet season, October to April. Major highways, such as the Arnhern and the Kakadu, have been flooded to the point of completely cutting off Jabiru. In 2006 and 2007, the rains and subsequent flooding damaged the West Alligator Bridge, preventing any traffic on the roads for several weeks. Jabiru’s economy is supported, not only by the mine, but also by tourism. The little city provides the accommodation and supply support for visitors to the park. The town plaza has a supermarket, tackle shop, post office, news agency, souvenir shop, hairdresser, café, and more. The town’s emergency services and Council offices are also on the town plaza. There are several recreation spots in Jabiru, such as the town lake. Along with picnic areas and barbecues, the lake is the best spot for barramundi fishing.
