Katherine Airport

Katherine Airport, in the Northern Territory is located at Royal Australian Air Force Base Tindal. It is officially called Katherine Tindal Civilian Airport, and is operated by the RAAF. When it was built in 1942, it was known as Carson’s Airfield. The Civil Construction Corps and the 43rd Engineer General Service Regiment of the US Army built the field. The No 1 Airfield Construction Squadron RAAF undertook further works at the airfield. The Field was named to honour Wing Commander Archibald R. Tindal, RAAF’s first officer killed in action on the mainland of Australia. He was killed during the bombing of Darwin on 19 February 1942. After World War II, the RAAF had no operational units at the base. In 1968, the rebuilt runways became home to Katherine’s domestic airport. Connellan Airways, Ansett-ANA, and TransAustralian Airlines were the first companies to serve the Airport. In 1984, the RAAF’s fast jet base was moved from Darwin to Tindal. In addition to being the RAAF’s Northern Territory main operational base, the airfield hosts other units for exercises. As a front-line operational Air base, Tindal is manned by uniformed personnel only. It is heavily defended and can accommodate hundreds of ground troops.
