Katherine

Katherine, Northern Territory is a town of about 6,000 people on the banks of the Katherine River. It is one of the largest settlements in the Top End and the closest town to RAAF Base Tindal. The RAAF Base is home to about 700 military personnel and families. Many family members work in Katherine, and the children attend school in the town. The Wardaman and Jawoyn people were the first Australian tribes in this area, which was a gathering and convergence place. It remains an important meeting place for the aborigines. In 1862, John McDouall Stuart passed through the area on a traverse across the continent, from north to south. He discovered the river and named it for a member of James Chambers’ family, either his wife or his daughter. Insufficient records can’t confirm the naming any further. A telegraph station, part of the Overland Telegraph Line, was completed in 1872. The little town that grew up around the station was a supply location for gold miners in Pine Creek. In 1889, gold was discovered closer to the town, at Mount Todd. In 1923, the North Australia Railway finished its extension to Katherine; however, the first train did not arrive until 1926.

17 Mile Falls

Take a short drive from Katherine to Nitmiluk National Park. The scenery in the park is spectacular, from your car and on short treks. But if you are anxious to see a hidden gem, you’ll have to walk 58 kilometres. This walking trek will take about four days, but the waterfall at the terminus is one of the most astounding in Australia. A campsite is near the falls with an emergency call device, and supply of drinking water.

Pioneer Life

Bullita Homestead is a prime example of outback farming life. Located on the East Baines River banks, a short drive from Katherine, the old homestead is open to the public. You can learn about the pastoral history of the region, see the stockyards, and visit the rock formations on Limestone Creek. The homestead site resides within Judbarra/Gregory National Park. An interpretive center at the old farm is an educational portrayal of pioneer life.
