Kununurra is the English pronunciation of a Miriwoong word, that being ‘gunanurang.’ The meaning of the Aboriginal word is ‘big waters’ or ‘big river.’ When settlers applied for a post office name, “Cununurra” was rejected by the Nomenclature Committee. They thought it too close to Cunnamulla’s name, so the townspeople chose to spell it with a “k.”
