Located in the Goldfields-Esperance region of the state, Laverton resides and is the administrative centre for the Shire of Laverton. The town is near the Great Victoria Desert, on its western edge. A proposed highway called Outback Way will route through the Northern Territory to Winton, and Laverton will be its western terminus. Frank Hann, David Carnegie, and John Forrest were some of the first explorers in the area. Dr. Charles W. Laver was a prospector who moved to the area in 1896, when gold was discovered. He was a most enthusiastic promoter of the area. The Craiggiemore mine proved to be very successful, and in 1897, residences and businesses were built near the mine. The townspeople called it Laverton, in honour of the doctor/prospector. Today’s Laverton lies 5 kilometres from the original site, as it proved unsuitable.

The Great Beyond Visitors Centre
The visitors’ centre in Laverton is called The Great Beyond for a very good reason. It is nearly ‘beyond’ any other destination in Western Australia.
