Leinster, Western Australia

Leinster, Western Australia is located within the northern goldfields region of the state. It is in the local government area of the Shire of Leonora, just 4 km east of Goldfields Highway, an important route in this area of the state. The small town is located nearly 1,000 kilometres from Perth, to the northeast. It had a population of 732 at the 2006 census.

Established in 1976 by Agnew Gold Mining Company, it was a dormitory town for nickel miners. The gold mining company took the settlement’s name from the nearby Leinster Downs station. Part of the BHP Billiton Nickel West business group, the Leinster Nickel Operation has about 992 workers who produce 45,000 tons of nickel per annum. From 2002 to 2007, the Thunderbox Gold Mine was actively mining gold; however, operations there have ceased, as nickel is more cost effective.

The nearest town of any size is Kalgoorlie-Boulder, and that is hundreds of kilometres away. Leonora is closer, but has a smaller population than Leinster. The Leinster Airport is home to Skippers Aviation and Alliance, and is mostly for fly-in fly-out passengers and crop dusters. Skippers Aviation flies to Wiluna, as well as Perth, while Alliance provides transportation only to Perth.

Leinster Facilities

The town of Leinster provides some portion of supplies to the Leinster Downs station; however, the main customers are the miners in the nickel mines. There is a supermarket, service station, post office, and a tavern. A primary school is provided for the miners’ children. BHP Billiton has built a sporting facility that includes an indoor sports centre and an 18-hole golf course. Many miners are fly-in fly-out, and are not reliant on Leinster for entertainment.

Arboretum

It is nearly 400 kilometres to Kalgoorlie from Leinster, but for those who go to the ‘big city,’ the Kalgoorlie Arboretum is a pleasant stop. Interpretive signs along the walking trails identify the flora and fauna around you. There are grassy areas under the river gum trees where you can relax with a picnic lunch. The Arboretum has a small dam that attracts many waterbirds. A dog exercise area is provided within the park.
