Leonora, Western Australia

Leonora, Western Australia is a town of about 400 people in the Goldfields-Esperance region of the state. Leonora is the administrative centre of the Shire of Leonora. It is over 825 kilometres from Perth, the capital city. Kalgoorlie is the nearest large town, and it lies 235 kilometres to the south. Leinster is nearby, but has only a few hundred more people. One third of the residents of Leonora claim an Aboriginal ancestor. The town is mainly a gold mining town. John Forrest was the first European explorer, in 1869. They made camp near a hill that he named for his niece, Fanny Leonora Hardey. In 1894, Morrisey, a prospector, found gold in the area. Within two years, many more rich finds brought miners and prospectors to the area. By 1897, residences and businesses were built, and the town was gazetted in 1898. The Sons of Gwalia gold mine was, for a time, the most famous in the world. This was for two reasons. One, it was managed and administrated by Herbert Hoover, future president of the United States. Two, it produced more gold than any other mine in the world. Today, Christmas Island refugees live at a former mining camp in the town.

Gwalia Historical Museum

The old mine offices of the Sons of Gwalia Gold Mine now houses the Historical Museum. Located in the now-ghost town of Gwalia, a short drive from Leonora, the museum covers the heritage brought to the region by Afghans, Yugoslavians, Italians, and other cultures. Aboriginal art is on exhibit, and stories of their people. The Hoover House Bed and Breakfast is nearby, in the home that Herbert Hoover inhabited. Enjoy a glass of wine or breakfast on the porch.

State Hotel

The State Hotel is located in Gwalia and is extremely easy to locate. It towers over every other building. It was built in 1903 as the first of Western Australia’s State Hotels. Tour the hotel after a two-minute drive from Leonora to Gwalia. In Leonora, you’ll find accommodations, a swimming pool, a bowling green, and a supermarket, among other enterprises.
