Lismore

Lismore, New South Wales has a population of about 31,000 people residing in the subtropical town. It is considered a Northern Rivers region in the state. It is located in the Bundjalung Aboriginal Nation area, where evidence of habitation has been found from 8,000 years ago. Lismore and it surrounds were, at one time, a rainforest called “The Big Scrub.” There are two locations near Lismore where you can still observe the rainforest as it existed before settlement. One is on the grounds of Southern Cross University, and the other is at Wilson’s Nature Reserve on Wyrallah Road. In 1843, European settlers including Captain Dumaresq had pastoral runs in the Lismore area. Other settlers tried their hands at sheep farming; however, the climate was found unsuitable for grazing, so runs were soon abandoned. William and Jane Wilson settled in the area in 1845 and named the location for Lismore, Scotland, a favorite of the couple’s. In 1855, surveyors came to determine a township site, and the proposed village plat was filed in 1856. The Post Office opened in October of 1859, and the municipality was incorporated in 1879. Lismore was not proclaimed a city until August of 1946, after World War II.

Minyon Falls

You can tour the rainforest by joining an eco-tour operated by Vision Walks. The two-hour walk through the Minyon Valley makes you feel as if a dinosaur might walk out from behind the trees at any moment. The vegetation is lush, the scenery breathtaking, and the waterfalls are magnificent. Along the way, you’ll see strangler figs, helmholtzia lilies, and bungalow palms. The trail has some strenuous patches, so be prepared to clamber over rocks.

Art Galleries

Several worthwhile art galleries in Lismore support local artists and artisans. Platypus Gallery prides itself on a diverse range of exhibitions and crafts. Most of the displayed objects are for sale. Nimbin Artists Gallery is run by volunteers and is a not-for-profit organization, selling, and showing local artists’ work. Lismore Café Exhibitions takes the work of local artists and showcases it in various cafes around the central business district. Look at some talented artists’ work.
