Maitland Airport

The New South Wales airport in Maitland is also known as Russell Field and is a general aviation airport. It is located in the Maitland suburb of Rutherford, about 5 kilometres from the city center. This airport does not have regularly scheduled service, as the field caters to private and recreational aircraft. The Royal Newcastle Aero Club has owned and operated the field since 1963. Along with the nearby Cessnock Airport, there is a shared large training area for beginning pilots. One of the founders of the Royal Newcastle Aero Club, Robert Russell, was honoured by the naming of the field. Mr. Russell met his demise at the airport, when he had a heart attack in 1966. The Maitland Aero Club of 1948 chose the Rutherford location for its headquarters, but it was out of business by 1957. The Royal Newcastle Aero Club was flourishing at that time, and agreed to buy the airfield. The airport has two runways, one of which was underwritten by the new owners. For a short time, passenger airlines operated out of the Maitland Airport, but they were discontinued in 2001.

Shop at the Showground

Maitland Fair Markets are located at the Maitland Showground, close to Maitland Airport, and operate from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm the first Sunday of every month. October to December, they are open the first and third Sundays. These markets have an astounding variety of homemade, home baked, and home grown goods. There are artisans and craftsmen selling their wares, and you’ll usually hear live music while you peruse the offerings. This is considered the most successful regional market in Australia.

The Maitland Regional Art Gallery is just a few moments from Maitland Airport. Housed in a Federation Gothic building constructed in the early 20th century, the Gallery focuses it collection on works on paper. The MRAG, as it is locally known, displays more than 2800 works of art by Australian and international artists. Art classes are available for all ages, and there is a small café in the Gallery.
