Maitland

The Lower Hunter Valley is home to Maitland, New South Wales. Maitland lies on the banks of the Hunter River, on the New England Highway, and is the Maitland City Council’s seat. According to the 2011 census, there were about 67,500 people residing, for the most part, along the New England Highway. Maitland has suburbs, Metford, Lorn, and Rutherford. At one time, three separate towns existed where Maitland stands today. Morpeth, East, and West Maitland functioned as separate entities. In 1945, the three were amalgamated into Maitland, and the city continues to incorporate outlying areas. In its earliest history, Maitland was a transportation hub for river vessels. Distribution of goods became a big part of the city’s economy. Traditional river traffic ended with the arrival of the railroad from Newcastle. This happened in the mid 19th century. In 1869, the first bridge was built over the Hunter River. It was named for the New South Wales governor in office at the time, the 4th Earl of Belmore. This bridge was deemed too low, as it was severely damaged during flooding in 1893, 1913, and 1930. In 1964, a new Belmore Bridge was built and is now one of three bridges.

Go to Gaol

The Maitland Gaol, that is. The cell doors are open and you can come and go as you please. This was obviously not the case for the hardened criminals who once occupied this 19th century gaol. For 150 years, the building was home to notorious criminals and noteworthy wardens and guards. On a tour of the facility, you can learn about prisoners and the daring escapes they tried. Groups are invited to a sleepover, if brave enough.

Take the Wine Bus

Best Tour will take you to the Hunter Valley wine country. Leave the driving to the bus driver, so that you can enjoy yourself without limit at the tasting rooms. The tour buses limit each group to 13 passengers, so you’re never crowded or rushed by a large number of people. The guides are thoroughly familiar with each vineyard, the owners, the winemakers, and the available of tastings.
