Manly

To the north of Sydney, in the Northern Beaches region, you’ll find a suburb called Manly, New South Wales. In its early history, Capt. Arthur Phillip was impressed with the confidence and behaviour of the indigenous aboriginal people. He called the place Manly Cove. The people he discovered were of the Guringai clan, Kay-ye-my. In the 1850s, Henry Gilbert Smith had a vision of this place being a seaside resort, and bought two parcels of land. Smith ran “excursion” paddle steamer trips to Manly, on demand or as reserved. He built wharves, bought steamers, and soon established regular service to Manly. Eventually, the Port Jackson & Manly Steamship Company bought all of Smith’s boats and came up with a Manly motto, “Seven miles from Sydney and a thousand miles from care.” As the beaches became more popular, in the early 20th century, visitors and tourists demanded to be able to swim in a swimsuit, in the daylight. After several challenges, the Manly Council voted to allow all-day bathing, as long as the swimming costume covered the wearer from neck to knee. After several drowning, a surf club was formed to safeguard the beach users.

Surf Manly

Surfing is a popular pastime on the Northern Beaches, and Manly is no exception. It’s great fun to paddle out into the ocean, then catch a wave and ride back to the shore. If you have no experience, but have always wanted to try the sport, take lessons at a surf school. Manly Surf School has been in operation for years, and they provide all the equipment you’ll need. Lessons are for all ages and abilities.
