Toll Roads in Melbourne

Yes, unfortunately Melbourne is one of the 3 Australian cities along with Brisbane and Sydney that have toll roads. This can be difficult when getting a rental car in Melbourne, so we have provided the following information to make your hire car experience in Melbourne much easier.

Toll roads in Melbourne are signified by the road signage. Toll roads signs have a blue background with gold text whereas normal untolled roads signs have a green background with white text.

To pay for tolls in Melbourne this is done either by manual billing, over the phone payment, payment over the internet or the most common of have a transponder in the vehicle. Vehicles pass through an arch that picks up on the transponder and bill accordingly. If a transponder is not picked up a phone of the licence plate is taken and one of the other methods of billing is used to make payment.

The transponders supplied by any of the toll road companies in Australia will work on all of Melbourne's toll roads.

Yes, we agree that toll roads are a pain but in most cases they make it very quick and easy to get around Melbourne. The main toll road sections are CityLink managed by Transurban and EastLink managed by ConnectEast

CityLink consists of three main parts:

  • Batman Avenue in Melbourne: This runs between Flinders St and Olympic Boulevard.
  • West M2: This runs along the Tullamarine Freeway between the West Gate Freeway in Port Melbourne to Bell street in Strathmore and includes the Bolte bridge.
  • South M1: This runs along the Monash Freeway from Power Street in Southbank to Toorak Road in Mavern and includes the Domain tunnel and the Burnley tunnel.

EastLink runs along part of the M3 between Springvale Rd in Nunawading and Frankston Freeway in Seaford. Along the way it runs through two tunnels, the Mullum Mullum tunnel and the Melba tunnel.

When hiring a rental vehicle at Melbourne Airport it is very difficult to leave without ending up on a toll road, so we suggest you confirm how you will pay for the toll fees when you pick up your vehicle because the suppliers will add an administration fee for any unpaid toll notices they receive for the car while in your posession.

We have put this table together to help you understand what the various car rental suppliers offer in terms of toll roads.
