Merimbula

Merimbula, New South Wales resides on the shores of Merimbula Lake, on the Sapphire Coast. At the 2011 census, there were about 7,000 residing in Merimbula and the area within a 10 km radius of the post office. The city is located just about midpoint between Sydney and Melbourne, with either trip taking about seven hours. Merimbula is an aboriginal word, meaning ‘two lakes.’ In the late 18th century, George Bass, a European voyager, explored the coast near Merimbula. It is believed that the Imlay brothers arrived here in the 1830s and established cattle runs on the river flats. This area of New South Wales was known for grazing and agriculture. Tent cities were replace by bark and slab huts, and as a community grew, housing became more permanent. Gold was discovered on the nearby Yowaka River in 1888, but the supply dwindled. At about the same time, tourism became important. The five beaches in Merimbula are known for surfing, snorkeling, and kitesurfing. Boating is always popular. The town owns its own theme park, Magic Mountain, which is home to roller coasters, toboggan slopes, and rides for all ages. Beautiful scenery can be seen throughout Bournda National Park.

If you don’t catch a glimpse of sea creatures on the beach, you can enter the aquarium and find sharks, shrimp, octopus, and all sorts of tropical fish.
