Milperra

Milperra, New South Wales is a suburb of the City of Bankstown, 24 kilometres from Sydney’s center. It has a population of approximately 4,000 people living on the banks of the Georges River. The University of Western Sydney has its Bankstown campus within Milperra. In its earliest history, the land around the suburb belonged to the Eora Aboriginal people. Their name for this place, Milperra, meant “gathering of people.” The original owner of most of the land was George Johnson, Jr. Soldiers returning from World War I influenced the naming of many streets, calling them by the names of the battles and officers with which they were familiar. Many of these soldiers settled on Johnson’s land and established vegetable gardens and poultry farms. Its common name at that time was Thorns Bush. In 1917, its official name was Bankstown Soldier Settlement. In 1974, the Milperra College of Advanced Education was founded, and later became the University of Western Sydney. Milperra is infamously known for the “1984 Massacre,” a conflict between rival motorbike gangs. The Bandidos and Comanchero faced off in a car park near the Viking Tavern. Six bikers and a 14-year old bystander were killed.

Deepwater Park

Deepwater Park is just one of the parks on the banks of the Georges River. The river was named for King George III, and bestowed on the body of water by Gov. Arthur Phillip. In 1795, Bass and Flinders explored the area. Exploration led to development of cities in the area, including Bankstown and Milperra. In addition to Deepwater Park, the Vale of Ah Reserve and the Riverlands Golf Course are located on the river.
