Mudgee

Mudgee, New South Wales is located in the Cudgegong River Valley. At the 2011 census, the centre of the Midwestern Regional Council had a population of nearly 10,000 people. The name is taken from the Wiradjuri ‘mou-gee’ meaning ‘contented,’ or from ‘moothi’ meaning ‘nest in hills.’ The first European to cross the Cudgegong River was James Blackman, in 1821. The commandant of Bathurst, Lt. William Lawson followed soon thereafter, and bought 6,000 acres in what would become Mudgee. The few settlers that came to the riverside were in nearly constant conflict with the Wiradjuri. One of the divisive issues was the killing of possums and kangaroos, which were a food sources for the Aborigines. When gold was discovered nearby, in Hargraves, the town prospered as a supply source for the miners. In 1860, Mudgee was declared a municipality, with a population of 1,500 people. With the demise of the gold mines just before the 20th century, the wool industry became important to the Mudgee economy. Soon, the wine industry established a foothold with the arrival of Adam Roth, a German immigrant. The presence of the new railroad made transportation of goods easier, and the town grew.
