Muswellbrook

Muswellbrook, New South Wales is both a town and a Local Government Area, located in the Hunter Valley region. At the 2011 census, the town had a population of nearly 12,000 people. In the early 19th century, surveyors in the area camped along a stream, and found mussels in the water. They called the area Mussel Creek, but today it is called Muscle Creek. For reasons unknown, when the town was established nearby, it was spelled as Muswell, apparently after the Muswell Hill region of London, England. In 1819, Chief Constable John Howe was the first European to the area. In 1833, the small settlement was declared a township. Coal mining was important to the area from the beginning. Today, there are numerous coal-mining sidings for the Main Northern Railway and the Merriwa Line that run through the town. Two power stations, Bayswater and Liddell, are coal-fuelled still today. Horse breeding is another significant enterprise in the Muswellbrook area. There are more than two dozen horse studs in the area, some of them available for tours. Transportation is facilitated by the presence of the New England Highway and the Golden Highway. The railway station is served by Countrylink, CityRail, and Interstate Coaches.

Horse Racing

Muswellbrook Race Course is home to the Race Club, one of the oldest in continuous operation in New South Wales. The Race Club was established in 1862. There are eighteen race meetings every year, at the course that maintains an excellent reputation. The racecourse was named after a local champion thoroughbred, Skellatar, in the 1930s. The Muswellbrook Cup Day is held the first Tuesday in November, the same day as the Melbourne Cup.

Weidmann Cottage

Weidmann Cottage was constructed in the 1840s, and occupied by the family until 1977. Today it is a historical museum in Muswellbrook and open every Saturday. There are hundreds of artifacts from the family, their butchery, and the area surrounding the town. It is operated by volunteers from the Muswellbrook Local and Family History Society. The Society has a research officer who is available to undertake research of local families, for a small fee.
