Narrabri

Narrabri, New South Wales is a town and Local Government Area in the North West Slopes of the state. Residing on the banks of the Namoi River, the town has a population of just over 6,100 people, according to the 2006 census. The Kamilaroi and Newell Highways intersect in Narrabri. Because of the surrounding geography, the area is known to flood from time to time. The Kamilaroi aboriginal people were the first inhabitants of this land, before European settlers arrived in the 19th century. The name of the town is derived from an early development called Narrabry Run. The most commonly accepted interpretation of “narrabry” is “forked waters,” in the Aboriginal language. Today, the district is known for its cotton growing industry. The Australian Cotton Exhibition Centre is in Narrabri. Wheat, lamb, and beef agricultural enterprises are also important to the local economy. South of town is the largest remaining temperate forest, the Pilliga Forest. Mount Kaputar National Park is a short drive away, as is the Paul Wild Observatory. The Observatory is home to the Australia Telescope Compact Array, a radio telescope comprised of six 22-metre diameter dish. The telescope/dishes are used for research in radio astronomy.

Craft Shop

Located within a building constructed in 1887, Narrabri Craft Shop is owned and managed by the Narrabri Art and Craft Society. The building itself is one of the town’s oldest buildings. Some of the crafts displayed therein have been around since long before the building was imagined. Some of the crafts mastered by members of the society are knitting, weaving, pottery making, jewelry, and textiles. Stop by to see their works and buy what appeals to you

Gaol in a Museum

Narrabri is home to an exceptional complex of colonial government buildings from the 19th century. One of the buildings is the old gaol that remained in constant use from 1882 until 1982. There is a courthouse, and other buildings in the complex. A collection donated by Marriot Dalway accurately depicts the history of the town and district. For an interesting experience, reserve a night in the gaol for your group.
