Nowra

Nowra, New South Wales is a city with a twin, named Bomaderry. The combined population is about 35,000 people. Located in the South Coast region, the city is the commercial centre and seat of Shoalhaven. Located geologically in the southern Sydney basin, the surrounding region is largely farming and dairy. There are a number of state forests throughout the area. Naval Air Station HMAS Albatross is about 10 kilometres southwest of the city. The name Nowra means “ black cockatoo” in the Aborigine’s language. The Yuin Nation’s Wodi-Wodi tribe inhabited the area south of Bomaderry Creek, while north was the Dharawal people. Mary Reibey, an ex-convict, received a land grant in 1824, near the Shoalhaven River. In 1852, Nowra was officially recognized as a township. The post office was in place in 1861. In 1840, the Bundanon house was built from weatherboard, and in 1866, a sandstone home was built immediately in front of it, incorporating the weatherboard home. It stands today as a famous landmark, and is listed on the Register of the National Estate. Sports are important in Nowra and are represented by Australian Rules football, a rugby league, a baseball team, and a basketball league.

In 1904, a brick lighthouse replaced the original timber structure that was constructed in 1882. Set at the mouth of the Shoalhaven River, the lighthouse is considered endangered. If you are a lighthouse enthusiast, you should visit this historic place while it remains standing. You’ll find the Keeper’s Cottage at South Solitary Island another endangered landmark. You can visit the old lighthouse and enjoy the scenery of the surrounding beaches and sand dunes.
