Orange

Orange, New South Wales resides in the Central West region approximately 250 kilometres west of Sydney. It has about 40,000 people, as of the last estimation. In 1822, “Blackman’s Swamp,” a convict settlement was established by Captain Percy Simpson. John Blackman was a hired guide who had previously been through the region as an explorer. During a survey trip in the 1820s, J.B. Richards noted a village reserve in Orange parish. Sir Thomas Mitchell had named the parish after his friend, the Prince of Orange. Graziers legally occupied the land in the 1830s and settlements were formed on the properties that had good access to roads. After surveying for a township, Blackman’s Swamp was chosen over Frederick’s Valley or Pretty Plains. In 1851, gold was discovered in nearby Ophir, leading to the Australian gold rush. Soon, Orange was established as a central trading centre for gold. There is a popular belief that the gold rush started near Bathurst, but that is incorrect, as it was closer to Ophir and Orange. The railway from Sydney was built through to Orange in 1877. Orange was proclaimed a city in 1946, exactly one hundred years after establishment as a village.
