Parramatta

Parramatta, New South Wales is the seat of the LGA of the city of the same name. It is a suburb of Sydney, lying about 23 km west of the capital city. The city of approximately 20,000 people has recently become a consolidation district for Sydney’s police force, water department, and other governmental facilities. In its earliest history, Parramatta was home to the Darug people, who took full advantage of the bounty from the river and forests of the area. In the Darug language, ‘burramatta’ means either ‘head of the waters,’ or ‘eel waters.’ Today, there are many eels in the freshwater river, which flows into salty Port Jackson waters. The first European settlers arrived in 1788, having moved to the area from Sydney Cove. The soil at Sydney Cove couldn’t support the convicts, soldiers, and administrators that came to the area. Parramatta River had fertile soil and fresh water, so the group moved to that area. In 1799, Governor Arthur Phillip built a small home on The Crescent summit. Governor Lachlan Macquarie replaced it with a larger residence in 1818. It is still in existence today as the Old Government House and can be seen in Parramatta Park.

You’ll tour the streets where strange occurrences have been reported, in Parramatta’s ‘dark underbelly.’ Hear about the man who was hanged three times, the floating coffin, the gaol’s darker history, and other tales. Formal or back clothing will help set the mood, if you’re so inclined.
