Port Macquarie

Port Macquarie, New South Wales resides at the mouth of the Hastings River, on the Mid North Coast. At the 2011 census, it had a population of nearly 42,000 people. The Port Macquarie LGA population was nearly 73,000. John Oxley was the first to visit the site in 1818, when he discovered the Pacific Ocean. He was exploring inland New South Wales and named the location for Lachlan Macquarie, the Governor. Founded at first as a penal settlement, it replaced Newcastle, which had become unsuitable for hardened criminals. Newcastle had lost its isolation feature with the arrival of farmers into the Hunter Valley, and was no longer considered a good place for the convicts. Port Macquarie, however, offered not only isolation and tough terrain, but also assistance from the local aborigines. The indigenous people would return escaped felons to the prison in exchange for blankets and tobacco. Conditions at the prison were archaic and brutal, but the convicts helped in the development of the city. They constructed buildings and cut timber. When the penal colony was closed in the 1830s, the settlers were pleased to take over the pastoral land, with its fisheries and timber resources.

Astronomical Observatory

Located in Rotary Park, near the centre of the city, the Port Macquarie Astronomical Observatory has a five-inch telescope. Built in the early 1960s by Albert York, the observatory is operated by the Port Macquarie Astronomical Association. It is open to the public on Sunday and Wednesday night, with doors opening at 7:15 pm. After an entertaining and educational presentation in the auditorium, visitors are given the chance to view astronomical objects through the telescope.
