Pyrmont

Pyrmont, New South Wales is one of Sydney’s inner-city suburbs. It is located in the Darling Harbour region. At the 2006 census it had a population of just over 11,000 people. Once a component of the industrial waterfront of Sydney, it was the location of many wharves, shipbuilders, woolstores, and factories. Although the population declined after industry left, it is being redeveloped with new residential housing and offices. In its earliest history, the region was home to the Eora tribe. The aboriginal name was ‘Pirrama,’ which is still used for a waterfront road. In 1795, Thomas Jones received a land grant of 55 acres. In 1796, Obadiah Ikin bought land for 10 pounds, which he sold, for a gallon of rum, to Capt. John Macarthur. Macarthur settled and was instrumental in the establishment of sandstone quarries. The quarries in Pyrmont supplied a substantial portion of stone for the 19th century buildings of Sydney. In the early 1900s, a sugar refinery was operated in the Pyrmont area, by CSR Limited. Later the in 19th century, Pyrmont was considered a slum. It further deteriorated after World War II when residents move to the outer suburbs and the Ultimo Powerhouse closed down, as well as other industry.
